A Dirty Chandelier

I love a story song. In my youth I listened to a lot of John Prine, Harry Chapin, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell…. I could go on. And if the story gave you a chuckle, well…. That was awesome! Who didn’t love “Thirty Thousand Pounds of Bananas”! (If you’ve never heard it, look it up – it’s funny!) So this new song is telling a story – true but enhanced for effect.

If you have ever worked in a large company, government agency, military post, school district, hospital… (Oh hell, pretty much anywhere big!) then you are familiar with the issues that can arise over trying to get a very simple job done, but having to deal with the paperwork, red tape, union rules, ranking systems, communication delays, etc. etc. etc. inherent in working for a very large group.

This song was inspired by listening to my colleague describe what he went through just trying to get a chandelier dusted. Oi vey! It led to a lively discussion of Rube Goldberg devices! (If you don’t know what that is, look it up. There are some fabulous videos online!)

This is my interpretation of his story. If it makes you chuckle, I’ve done my job!

You can hear the song “A Dirty Chandelier” on this site in the video library, on Facebook at Laviebowem, or search for Mary Pat Bowe on YouTube.
